Overthinking is actually a very common thing, and has many negative consequences. Overthinking can cause us to worry excessively and lead to a lack of action (known as analysis paralysis). It also drains us of our mental energy and makes us depressed. It is related to our lack of perceived control to certain things in life. It is more common in females than males.
How do you know when you are over thinking vs critically analyzing a situation? It’s hard to tell, but usually you know you are over thinking if the logic doesn’t follow or gut feeling tells you otherwise. Like if you think of conclusion A, but B and C counters that, then it could be over thinking. 
How to not over think? Think until you’re tired and at peace with an answer. Studies have shown that trying to suppress thoughts actually works counter productively. It’s better to try to think things through, but then be aware of the negative side effects.
